Welcome to the future

Welcome to the future ,

Hello — again.

As you might have heard, I’m stepping in to be the next editor-in-chief of The Verge. I’m also excited to announce that my friend Dieter Bohn will be our new executive editor. We’ll be working with the amazing team that’s already in place and making The Verge happen every day, a team I think is the best in the industry.

This is going to be rad.

The Verge at its best is a window into the future — the future of technology, design, science, and culture. That’s the vision we had for the site when we launched it in 2011, and it’s the vision now. And the job of examining and understanding that future has become more important than ever, as technology has become a disruptive force in every sense of the word. Every story is a technology story; every technology story is a culture story. There’s no line — there’s just the way we live now and the way we’ll live soon.

Every story is a technology story; every technology story is a culture story

Part of building The Verge is actually building the future: the internet has completely upended the media business, and we’re part of Vox Media, the most innovative next-generation media company in the game. I’ve spent the past few months working with the singularly-talented Melissa Bell and Ezra Klein on Vox.com, and it’s been astonishing to watch them work with our world-class product team to push the limits of Chorus, our shared publishing platform. Vox Media also just brought on the brilliant team behind Editorially, who will take Chorus even further. I can’t wait to bring some of that innovation and creativity back to The Verge — we have the best reporters and editors working on the best platform, and the combination is going to result in some of the best storytelling experiences anywhere.

It’s already happening: just within the past couple of days The Verge has reviewed an entirely new smartphone platform, told the story of the life and death of a notorious doomsayer, and detailed how safer pot brownies are coming your way. That’s just the tip of the iceberg — there’s much, much more to come.

If you didn't hear, Joshua Topolsky is joining Bloomberg. We are all incredibly grateful for his leadership and vision and wish him the very best.

The world moves faster now: language and fashion and heartbreak and joy come and go in moments, flashes of experience that bring us together in bursts of energy and then fade away into so many sparkles of memory. Every day offers a new chance to journey beyond right now into the future; the future hidden just behind the screen of your smartphone.

Let’s go.
